Your Identity & your Experience of Emotions & Feelings are two different things.
To understand the difference…just imagine these visual analogies with me….
You the Sky and your emotions represent the weather. The sky is never damaged by the storm ~ the raining, hailing or lightning. The sky simply holds space for the storm to happen.
Just the same…
You are not your feelings. Your feelings are NOT your identity. Your emotions and feelings simply represent how you are feeling…
For example…
You are not “Angry”. You are feeling Anger.
You are not “Sad”. You are feeling Sad.
Your Identity and your experience of feelings & emotions are two different things.
There is major difference between saying “I am sad” ( Identity) versus saying “I am experiencing sadness” (Experience).
Viewing your feelings and emotions as your identity traps you. Viewing your feelings and emotions simply as an experience you are having frees you.
Therefore, the very next time you experience a strong emotion like sadness, anger, anxiety, fear, guilt, shame…imagine your strong emotion and feelings like you are watching a cloud passing by in the sky. The cloud will pass. It always does. The sky remains the sky regardless of the weather on a given day, week or year or in a given moment ~ past, present and future.
Remember, you can FEEL an emotion or your feelings without envisioning yourself as becoming the emotion or feeling. You might say I feel this emotion______ or this feeling______ but regardless of the passing emotion or feeling you are experiencing ~ you still remain YOU. Remember, no matter what you are feeling ~ your identity is unchanged regardless of whatever emotions or feelings you are experiencing on a given day, week or year or in a given moment ~ past, present and future.
You can feel anger…you can feel sadness…you can feel anxiety, fear, guilt or shame…without viewing your emotions or feelings as being WHO you are (Identity). Your emotions and feelings pass…they come and go…sometimes they are heavier or lighter in the experience…sometimes they are all over the place it seems…but YOUR PERSON, YOUR IDENTITY is still YOU.
Another way to see your feelings and your emotions are like “come and go visitors”. It doesn’t matter what feelings or emotions you are experiencing…they do not identify WHO you are nor are they allowed to move in as members of your household. They don’t ever get permanent residence nor do they get to make their emotion-mail live at your address. Your emotions and feelings are temporary visitors. You ARE a permanent resident of YOU. Your identity is permanently who you are no matter the experience you are moving through. The experience is passing through ~ along with the emotions and feelings that go with it. They all move through~but they don’t get to move in!
THE VISITOR MINDSET:
Remember…you are the house. The emotion or feeling is the temporary visitor.
Just because a visitor enters your house doesn’t mean they own the title to your home.
Let them have a seat, let them speak, and then open the door and let them leave.
Observe your emotions, just don’t absorb them.
